European think-tank urges UN to hold Pakistan accountable for promoting terrorism
A European think-tank has urged the United Nations to hold Pakistan accountable for promoting terrorism and failing to live up to its legal and moral obligations towards its own people and the international community.
During an intervention at the ongoing 46th session of UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Aaron Magunna, a research analyst at European Foundation for South Asian Studies (EFSAS) said, "In 2019 and 2020, following growing diplomatic pressure from the FATF and seemingly not driven by a genuine attempt to combat terrorism, Pakistan arrested Hafiz Saeed and Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, two UN-designated terrorists.
These sham arrests exemplify Pakistan's double-edged approach towards terrorist activities: terrorism is patronized when strategically useful but opposed when it targets Pakistani interests".
He added, "This is most apparent in Afghanistan, where Pakistan will now have to adapt to an at least partially Taliban-led government".
Global terror watchdog Financial Action Task Force (FATF) recently announced that Pakistan will continue to remain on its grey list due to failure to comply with all the points of a plan of action set by it to combat terror financing.
US State Department warns businesses of potential sanctions risks regarding deals with Iran following Iran's engagement with Pakistan. Recent US sanctions target entities aiding Pakistan's ballistic missile program, including Chinese companies. The Pentagon reaffirms positive relations with Pakistan, emphasizing its importance as a regional security partner.

Russia Vetoes UN Resolution , to Prevent Nukes in Space.
The resolution was sponsored
by Japan and the United States.
It called on all nations to refrain from developing or deploying nuclear weapons "or other weapons of mass destruction in space," 'The Guardian' reports. .
A 1967 international treaty
already bans such weapons in space.
Russia’s U.N. Ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia,
vetoed the resolution, calling it "absolutely absurd and politicized," as well as a "dirty spectacle.".
China abstained from voting, while the rest of the 15-member council voted in favor of the resolution. .

Nebenzia went on to say, "if we recall that the U.S. and their allies announced some time ago plans to place weapons … in outer space.".
The U.S.-Japan resolution was announced in March after it was determined that Russia was in possession of "a 'troubling' anti-satellite weapon capability," 'The Guardian' reports.
However, earlier this year, Putin said, , "Our position is clear and transparent: We have always been categorically against and are now against the deployment of nuclear weapons in space."
