The phreatomagmatic eruption produced a 300-metre-high dark grey plume shortly before midday in Batangas province.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said further phreatomagmatic eruptions were expected and the volcano remained at an alert level 3.

In the first incident, the volcano belched a 300-metre-high greyish column from 5:18 am to 5:19 am followed by four other eruptions were logged at 8:47 am, 9:15 am, 9:26 am, and 11:56 am.

Thousands of residents living near the volcano have been evacuated.

Smoke has also been seen from homes in the capital Manila, around 43 miles away.
