Sikhism is a religion and philosophy that originated in the late 15th century in the Punjab region of India. Sikhs are the group's members. Gurmat (Punjabi: "the Way of the Guru") is the name given to the Sikh faith. Sikhism was founded by Guru Nanak (1469–1539) and led by a succession of nine additional Gurus, according to Sikh belief. Sikhs believe that a single spirit possessed all ten human Gurus. Following the death of the 10th Guru, Guru Gobind Singh (1666–1708), the immortal Guru's spirit was transferred to the sacred scripture of Sikhism, Guru Granth Sahib ("The Granth as the Guru"), also known as the Adi Granth ("First Volume"), which became the single Guru. There were nearly a billion people in the early twenty-first century.
