Reuters reports that the talks in Cairo have been
touted as the final step in reaching an extended
40-day ceasefire between Hamas and Israel.
The truce would see Israeli hostages
released in exchange for aid being
allowed to enter the besieged Gaza. .
The delegation will remain
in Cairo on Tuesday for more
talks, they are expected to wrap
up this round later today. , Hamas official, via Reuters.
According to Egypt's Qahera television,
the talks continue to face "difficulties.".
Senior Hamas official Bassem Naim said that
the militant group's latest offer for a ceasefire has
been presented and is now awaiting Israel's response.
However, Israeli officials have countered that their
own agreement was awaiting Hamas' approval. .
The United States, a sponsor of the talks and
one of Israel's closest allies, supported Israel's
assertion that the ball remains in Hamas' court. .
At the same time, the U.S. has called on Israel to alleviate the
humanitarian disaster in Gaza, where over 30,000 Palestinians
have been killed since the recent wave of fighting began.
