Labour attacks govt's 'broken promise' on fracking
Labour has launched a scathing attack on the government's plan to end the ban on fracking, saying it puts "the interests of fossil fuel companies above that of the British people."
Shadow Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband said in a heated House of Commons debate: "We will hang this broken promise round their necks in every part of the country between now and the next general election … you can't escape a fossil fuels crisis by doubling down on fossil fuels." Rishi Sunak has teared into Labour at a campaign launch at a Derbyshire bus depot this morning by raising the issue of cash-strapped local councils, saying Labour is "unable to balance the books when it is in local government". The prime minister then added “just look what’s happening here, Nottingham Council effectively bankrupt. After having a fire-sale of assets, they still can’t balance the books, in contrast to the extraordinarily well-run Conservative Nottinghamshire County Council". He also said that "whenever Labour runs something, they run it into the ground. In Birmingham, they have effectively bankrupted the largest local authority in Europe. Labour has challenged Rishi Sunak to name the date of the next election. The shadow paymaster general Jonathan Ashworth said it was in the “national interest” to declare the date as “businesses want to know what is happening.”

Rishi Sunak said the conflict in Gaza "must end" as he addressed MPs in the House of Commons. The prime minister said he will be speaking to Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to express solidarity and to discuss how we can prevent further escalation. "Nothing that has happened over the last 48 hours affects our position on Gaza. The whole country wants to see an end to the bloodshed and to see more humanitarian support going in," he added.

Lord David Cameron has faced accusations of hiding from scrutiny amid questions about the UK’s arms sales to Israel.
