Russia scrambles fighter jets against US planes near Russian territory | Oneindia News
Russia’s defence ministry has said that a Russian Su-35 combat plane was scrambled over the Baltic Sea after two United States strategic bombers flew in the direction of the Russian border.
The two aircraft sighted heading towards the Russian border were US Air Force B52H strategic bombers.
The ministry said that later, the fighter jets returned to base after the US planes moved away from Russian territory.
The encounter on Monday follows last week’s diplomatic furore following the crash of a US surveillance drone into the Black Sea after it was intercepted by two Russian Su-27 fighter jets in what was the first known direct military contact between Russia and the US since Russia invaded Ukraine in February last year.
The Su-35 fighter was scrambled to prevent “a violation of the state border” by the US aircraft, the ministry said, after the aircraft had reached a “designated air patrol area”.
Russia has accused the US of collecting intelligence through surveillance flights..which was then given to Ukraine to attack Russian targets.
Moscow has also accused the US of provoking the drone incident by ignoring flight restrictions imposed to protect Russian territory and has said that Russia “will respond in kind” to all future provocations.
Elon Musk's start-up Neuralink on Thursday said it has gotten approval from US regulators to test its brain implants in people. Neuralink said that clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its first-in-human clinical study is ‘an important first step’ for its technology, which is intended to let brains interface directly with computers.

The first of the three Russian hypersonic missile scientists to be arrested on suspicion of treason will go on trial next week in a case which apparently involves accusations of betraying secrets to foreign adversaries. The criminal case against Anatoly Maslov, 76, will open in Saint Petersburg’s city court on June 1. The St. Petersburg City Court also ruled on May 24 that Maslov's detention would be extended until at least November 10. Soon after his arrest, authorities had flown him to Moscow and put him in pre-trial detention in Lefortovo prison…a former KGB interrogation site where Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich is also being held. The details of the case are classified, but some local media reports cited sources close to scientific circles as saying that the three scholars are suspected of handing information related to their research to China.

In what is believed to be a stunning military operation for Kyiv, two Russian jets and two military helicopters were shot down near the Ukrainian border, while a fifth aircraft crashed on Saturday on the Russian side. A Russian Sukhoi Su-34 fighter-bomber, Su-35 fighter, and two Mi-8 helicopters that had made up a military raiding party were “shot down almost simultaneously” in an ambush in the Bryansk region, adjoining northeast Ukraine.

Russia has said that it has scrambled an Su-27 fighter jet to “prevent violations of the state border” by two United States Air Force strategic bombers flying over the Baltic Sea. Russia’s Defence Ministry said in a statement that its military had prevented any border violation by the US planes and “the flight of the Russian fighter was carried out in strict accordance with international rules for the use of airspace”. “After removing the foreign military aircraft from the Russian state border, the Russian fighter went back to its air base. Brigadier General Pat Ryder, a Pentagon spokesperson, acknowledged that US planes were intercepted by Russia, explaining that the B-1 bombers were participating in a “long-planned exercise in Europe.” The crew of the Russian fighter classified the adversary aerial targets as two US Air Force B-1B strategic bombers.

On September 26 of 2022, a series of deep-sea explosions rocked the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2. The massive blast of the natural-gas pipelines jolted along the bottom of the Baltic Sea near the Danish Island of Bornholm. There have been several theories about who was responsible, but the case is far from solved. Now, a new theory has emerged. This theory holds at least two Ukrainians responsible for the Nord pipeline explosion. Germany’s Sueddeutsche Zeitung daily came up with this explanation.

Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick says net migration is “far too high” after newly published figures for 2022 showed around 606,000 more people are estimated to have moved to the UK than have left. The Office for National Statistics said factors contributing to relatively high levels of immigration over the past 18 months include people coming to the UK from non-EU countries for work, study, and for humanitarian purposes, including those arriving from Ukraine and Hong Kong. In a major development, Russia has accused Kyiv of carrying ot cross-border sabotage in the Belgorod region. Kyiv has denied these accusations by saying that the groups responsible for the attacks don’t follow their orders…and they act on their own. Two groups have claimed responsibility for this cross-border raids….The Freedom of Russia Legion…and the Russian Volunteer Corps. Both have said that they had carried out the attacks and liberated a settlement in the region. The Free Russia legion was formed in March 2022. Reportedly, its first members were soldiers who had defected from the Russian military shortly after Moscow launched its massive, unprovoked Ukrainian invasion on February 24 last year. In their manifesto, they describe themselves as free citizens of Russia who take responsibility for themselves and are beginning to fight for a New Russia. The exact number of fighters in the organization is still a secret, but it is speculated that figures are as high as up to 4,000.

A group of anti-Putin Russian nationals – who are aligned with the Ukrainian army – has claimed responsibility for an attack in Russian’s southwestern region of Belgorod…as Moscow said it was fighting a group of saboteurs there. Shelling damaged an administrative building, several residential buildings, and a kindergarten in the area, according to Belgorod’s regional governor who said there were no fatalities. In a Telegram post, groups calling themselves the “Freedom of Russia Legion” and “Russian Volunteer Corps” said they had “liberated” a settlement in the Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine. Ukraine has disavowed connection to the Russian partisan fighters, saying that they act independently and are not subject to military control. The Freedom of Russia Legion, which describes itself as an anti-Kremlin militia seeking to liberate Russia from Vladimir Putin, said it had crossed the border and overrun the settlement of Kozinka, while sending units into the town of Grayvoron in Russia’s Belgorod region. Another anti-Kremlin militia, the Russian Volunteer Corps, which is led by a prominent Russian nationalist, also said it had taken part in the raid.
