A brief history of US Presidents’ relationship with Ireland
US President Joe Biden arrives in Belfast on Tuesday evening for a tour of the island of Ireland.
President Biden’s visit marks the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement which largely brought an end to decades of violence in Northern Ireland known as The Troubles.
Mr Biden has IrishCatholic heritage, and he will visit his ancestral homes of counties Louth and Mayo during his four-day visit.
However, he is by no means the first US president to have connections with the Emerald Isle.

More lives were probably lost than saved through the British Army’s operation of its top agent inside the IRA’s internal security unit during the Troubles, a major independent investigation has found. Operation Kenova examined the role of Stakeknife, widely believed to be west Belfast man Freddie Scappaticci, who was embedded in the IRA’s so-called “nutting squad”, responsible for interrogating, torturing and murdering people suspected of passing information to security forces during the conflict. Prime Minister Hun Manet announced that twenty soldiers lost their lives in an ammunition explosion at a base in western Cambodia. The incident, which also left several soldiers injured, took place on Saturday afternoon at an army base in Kampong Speu province. "Hundreds of thousands" of people descended on London for a pro-Palestinian march on Saturday, as the Metropolitan Police warns months of protest have caused "fear and uncertainty" in Jewish communities.
The event, organised by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC), began at Parliament Square from 12pm and is expected to draw larger crowds as the day goes on.
