What Is Yom Kippur, the Holiest Day of the Jewish Year?

What Is Yom Kippur, , the Holiest Day of the Jewish Year?.

'National Geographic' explains that Yom Kippur comes as the emotional climax of the Jewish faith's holiday period that begins with Rosh Hashanah.

Yom Kippur, or the "day of atonement," comes on the tenth day of Tishri, which is the first month of the civil year and the seventh month of the religious year.

On the Gregorian calendar, Yom Kippur will take place on September 24, 2023.

According to tradition, the holiday can be traced back to the prophet Moses.

Also known as the Days of Awe, Yom Kippur is a day for Jews to perform prayers, repent and give to charity to influence which of God's books their names are written in.

According to the faith, God inscribes names into one of three books on Rosh Hashanah.

.

One book is reserved for good people, another for evil people and a third for those who are not totally good or evil.

On Yom Kippur, work is forbidden, and atonement takes the shape of fasting and refraining from bathing, having sex, wearing shoes or applying lotion.

.

Attending services at a synagogue is a central part of Yom Kippur.

Five different services have different purposes, including prayers for the dead.

.

Finally, to mark the end of the 25-hour fast, a ram's horn is blown, and congregants return home to break their fast with family and friends.
