Von der Leyen and Metsola arrive in Israel in show of solidarity after Hamas attacks
The visit to Israel by the presidents of two of the EU's most important institutions comes six days after Hamas carried out its surprise land, sea and air attack in Israel, which has left more than 1,300 people dead since 7 October - more than in the entire Second Intifada - and 3,200 wounded.
Khalil al-Hayya of Hamas stated that Israel's bombings in Gaza have killed 70% of the Israeli captives taken during the October 7 attacks. He accused Israel of prolonging truce negotiations to prepare for an invasion of Rafah. Al-Hayya emphasized that any truce must include a cessation of aggression and a captive exchange deal.
