The Kerala state government has declared a statewide emergency after the Liberian-flagged cargo ship MSC ELSA 3 sank off its coast on Sunday. The ship was carrying 640 containers, including 13 with hazardous cargo like calcium carbide, which releases flammable acetylene gas. The incident has triggered fears of a major ecological disaster. Authorities have issued alerts for potential oil spills and toxic container drift, especially in southern Kollam and Alappuzha.
