Supreme Court Rules That Some Jan. 6 Defendants Were Improperly Charged

Supreme Court Rules That , Some Jan.

6 Defendants, Were Improperly Charged.

NPR reports that the United States Supreme Court voted to limit which defendants accused of taking part in the Jan.

6 Capitol riot can be charged by federal prosecutors.

The decision also casts doubt on two out of the four felony counts in former President Donald Trump's election subversion indictment.

According to conservative Chief Justice John Roberts, the court ruled that the U.S. government must prove , “that the defendant impaired the availability or integrity for use in an official proceeding of records, documents, objects, or other things used in an official proceeding.”.

NPR reports that prosecutors relied on a key criminal statute to prosecute over 350 participants of the Capitol riot.

The statute makes it a crime to alter or destroy official documents, or to otherwise obstruct or impede official proceedings.

Roberts wrote that the statute was not meant to broaden the meaning of the law to make it a catchall provision.

.

The decision will impact other cases related to Jan.

6, many of which will have to be resentenced, retried or defendants will be released.

.

NYU law professor Ryan Goodman authored a study that found only 346 of the 1,417 people charged in connection with the Capitol riot were charged under the obstruction statute.

The study also found that 71 people are still awaiting trial on the obstruction charge, but over half of them are also charged with another felony.

NPR points out that if found guilty of other felony charges, the sentencing judge is still allowed to use the charge of obstruction to determine the length of their sentence.

VIDEO: Civilians Killed As Israeli Strike Hits Gaza | Ex-Israeli Officials ‘Begs’ Trump To Stop War

Tensions in Gaza reached a breaking point after an Israeli airstrike struck an apartment in the Al-Maqousi Towers in northwest Gaza, leaving multiple civilians dead and many others severely injured. As sirens echoed through the area, chaos and devastation unfolded yet again. The strike comes amid rising pressure on Israeli leadership from within its own ranks. Over 600 retired Israeli security officials, including former heads of intelligence, have written a joint letter to U.S. President Donald Trump, urging him to intervene and pressure Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to end the war in Gaza. The officials claim Hamas no longer poses a strategic threat and that continued warfare is only prolonging suffering. Despite indirect ceasefire talks stalling, Netanyahu is reportedly pushing to intensify military operations. The internal dissent reflects a growing concern that Netanyahu’s decisions are politically motivated, risking further bloodshed and regional instability. #GazaAirstrike #IsraelGazaWar #AlMaqousiTowers #NetanyahuWar #TrumpGazaLetter #StopTheWar #GazaUnderAttack #GazaBombing #IsraeliAirstrike #PalestineNews #HamasWar #MiddleEastTensions #CeasefireNow #EndGazaWar #TrumpNetanyahu #GazaSuffering #IDFBombing #GazaDeaths #CiviliansKilled #HumanitarianCrisis ~PR.274~GR.122~HT.318~

Brazil Jails Trump’s Ally Bolsonaro—White House WARNS of Consequences as Trade WAR with Lula Ignites

Brazil’s political crisis just went global. Former President Jair Bolsonaro has been placed under house arrest by Brazil’s Supreme Court for allegedly plotting a coup to stay in power after losing the 2022 election. But the arrest has sparked international outrage — especially from former U.S. President Donald Trump, who blasted the move as a “witch hunt” targeting one of his closest allies. In retaliation, the U.S. administration has imposed a 50% tariff on Brazilian imports, linking it directly to Bolsonaro’s legal case. Trump and U.S. officials are calling out Brazil’s judiciary for “silencing” Bolsonaro and demanding that he be allowed to speak publicly. #Bolsonaro #Trump #BrazilNews #WitchHunt #TradeWar #USBrazilRelations #JairBolsonaro #TrumpAlly #LulaDaSilva #BrazilPolitics #GlobalCrisis #TariffWar #BolsonaroTrial #PoliticalPersecution #BreakingNews

Nancy Pelosi BLASTS Trump's 'ILLEGAL' Troop Move Into California | Asks,‘Where Was This on Jan 6?’

Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi is criticizing Donald Trump for deploying the National Guard to Los Angeles without Governor Gavin Newsom's consent, calling it a violation of Article 10 of the Constitution. Pelosi compared this to Trump’s refusal to deploy the Guard during the January 6 Capitol riot, despite bipartisan pleas. “And yet, in a contra-constitutional way, he has sent the National Guard into California,” she said. With legal and political tensions rising, Pelosi warns: "Something is very wrong with this picture." #NancyPelosi #Trump #NationalGuard #Constitution #Article10 #CaliforniaPolitics #GavinNewsom #LosAngeles #PelosiStatement #CapitolRiots #January6 #PelosiVsTrump #BreakingNews #PoliticalTensions #RuleOfLaw #USPolitics #TrumpControversy #BipartisanConcerns #MilitaryPower #PelosiSpeaksOut #TrumpNews #CapitolAttack #GuardDeployment #FederalPower #CaliforniaNews #TrumpVsNewsom #ConstitutionalCrisis #PelosiAlert #NationalSecurity #DemocracyWatch Also Read US Deploys 700 Marines To Los Angeles As Immigration Protests Intensify Against Trump's Diktat :: https://www.oneindia.com/international/us-deploys-700-marines-to-los-angeles-as-immigration-protests-intensify-against-trumps-diktat-4176947.html?ref=DMDesc Protests Intensify In Los Angeles After Trump Deploys Hundreds Of National Guard Troops :: https://www.oneindia.com/international/protests-intensify-in-los-angeles-after-trump-deploys-hundreds-of-national-guard-troops-4175915.html?ref=DMDesc Trump Warns Musk Against Supporting Democrats: 'Serious Consequences If He Does That' :: https://www.oneindia.com/international/trump-warns-musk-against-supporting-democrats-serious-consequences-if-he-does-that-4175377.html?ref=DMDesc ~ED.194~HT.336~
