Ukraine-Russia talks in Istanbul kick off at a lower level and with lowered expectations
Ukrainian and Russian officials met in Istanbul on Friday for the first time since March 2022.
Although the negotiations are now scheduled at a lower level, they are still taking place, with Turkish and US representatives participating.

Peace talks between Russia and Ukraine are back on the table in Istanbul. Russian negotiator Vladimir Medinsky says Moscow is open to “possible compromises,” with a high-level delegation from defense, foreign affairs, and intelligence ministries already in place. Ukraine, which initially demanded a 30-day ceasefire, changed its stance after Donald Trump publicly backed renewed negotiations. President Zelensky, while refusing direct dialogue with Putin, has sent Defense Minister Rustem Umerov to lead the talks.

NATO General Mark Rutte slammed Russia for sending a ‘low-level’ delegation to the Peace talks being held in Istanbul.
