Aiming to deter hit and run cases, the government has proposed a new provision of up to 10-year jail term and fine for offending drivers, if the accused flees from the scene or fails to report the incident to police or magistrate soon after the incident. Currently, there is no such provision in the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
