Under new law, 10-year jail in hit-and-run cases

IndiaTimes Saturday, 23 December 2023
The enactment of the new penal law, Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, aims to curb hit and run accidents, which annually claim around 50,000 lives. The law introduces stricter penalties for those who flee the scene after causing a road crash, with up to 10 years imprisonment and a fine. The law also includes provisions for leniency for those who voluntarily inform the police and assist the injured. Currently, hit and run cases are tried under Section 304A of the Indian Penal Code, which provides for penalties of up to two years in jail.
