Once enemy of democracy, ex-Maoist commander to vote in Gadchiroli Nov 20
Saturday, 9 November 2024 Vilas Kolha, a former Maoist commander, is casting his vote in the Maharashtra assembly elections, marking a significant victory for democracy. Kolha, who once led attacks to disrupt polls, surrendered three years ago and now advocates for democratic processes. His transformation highlights the changing landscape in Gadchiroli, where surrendered Maoists are embracing new lives and supporting development initiatives.
Chhattisgarh Naxal Encounter: In a major anti-Naxal operation, security forces in Chhattisgarh's Bastar division neutralized 22 Maoists in two separate encounters. The first gunfight took place in the dense forests along the Bijapur-Dantewada border, where 18 Maoists were killed. Another encounter in Kanker district led to the elimination of four more insurgents. A District Reserve Guard (DRG) jawan was injured in the operation. Weapons and explosives were recovered from the sites. Union Home Minister Amit Shah hailed the success, reaffirming the government's commitment to a ‘Naxal-Mukt Bharat’ (Naxal-free India).
