Tens of thousands of ancient coins discovered off Sardinia, potentially from a shipwreck

Tens of thousands of ancient bronze coins have been uncovered off the coast of Sardinia after a diver spotted a metallic object. The discovery was made near the town of Arzachena and is believed to date back to the first half of the fourth century. The coins were found in a bed of sea grass and are estimated to number between 30,000 and 50,000. The Italian culture ministry described the find as one of the most significant coin discoveries in recent years. The coins are currently being sorted and some are said to be in an excellent state of preservation.
