Migrants reaching Spain's Canary Islands near 32,000 this year

IndiaTimes Sunday, 5 November 2023
The Canary Islands in Spain have seen a record number of migrant arrivals this year, with nearly 32,000 people reaching the islands on fragile boats from West Africa. This surpasses the previous record set in 2006. The increase in arrivals is attributed to milder weather and calmer seas since September. The Spanish government plans to create additional emergency accommodation for around 3,000 migrants in military barracks, hotels, and hostels. The regional authorities have called for more assistance from the Spanish government and the European Union to address the humanitarian crisis.
