Hong Kong prosecutors allege democracy publisher Jimmy Lai urged protests, sanctions against China
Wednesday, 3 January 2024 Prosecutor Anthony Chau presented evidence of Jimmy Lai's instructions to Apple Daily's management to urge protests against the extradition bill. The bill, later withdrawn, would have allowed extraditions to mainland China where coerced confessions and political considerations in courts are common. Lai also allegedly instructed the introduction of English content to seek foreign sanctions against China and Hong Kong. WhatsApp messages revealed that Lai wanted Apple Daily to focus on the 'yellow' viewpoint and garner support from political leaders like Pence, Pompeo, and Rubio.
