He also lashed out at AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal over not wearing ‘gamocha’. “Rahul Gandhi has very limited knowledge of the culture of Assam. Only recently, Badruddin Ajmal disrespected the (Assamese) gamocha. Congress party can only indulge in the politics of opportunism,” he said. “People who set these guarantees have very limited knowledge. The five guarantees by Congress is a display of mental bankruptcy,” he added. The three-phase Assam polls will conclude on April 6, votes will be counted on May 2.

Assam recorded a voter turnout of nearly 75 percent in the second phase of polling, according to the latest figures from the Election Commission. The second phase election was held in 39 constituencies across 13 districts. According to EC data, the voter turnout was 74.76 percent at 7.30 pm. The polling ended at 6 pm. Congress alleged BJP behind the “disappearing” of an alliance party leader Rangja Khungur Basumatary. Congress demanded an investigation by Election Commission. AIUDG chief Badruddin Ajmal has triggered controversy for allegedly throwing a 'gamosa'. Referring to this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his rally in Kokrajhar said that everyone who loves Assam is hurt and angry after seeing those pictures as the hard work of the women of Assam 'Gamosa' was insulted publicly. PM Modi said, "Congress leaders say that the 'lock and key' (AIUDF symbol) people are the identity of Assam. Understand the lies and conspiracy of Congress. It has surrendered before such people to come back to power. Not only Congress but the entire Mahajot will be punished for this insult."

Jharkhand Congress MLA Irfan Ansari stoked controversy by performing puja at a temple. Ansari performed puja at Deoghar's Baidyanath Dham temple, a sacred abode of Lord Shiva. BJP MP Dr Nishikant Dubey demanded arrest of Ansari after he offered prayers at temple. Dubey claimed that entry of non-Hindus is strictly not allowed at Baidyanath temple. The MP from Godda demanded that Jharkhand's JMM-led govt order arrest of Ansari. He also sought action against the deputy commissioner and SP of Deoghar. Meanwhile, Ansari accused Dubey of playing dirty politics in the name of religion. Ansari, MLA of Jamtara, had entered temple's sanctum sanctorum with his companions and performed puja. Ansari claimed that he has been coming to the temple since childhood to seek blessings.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament Nishikant Dubey on April 16 said that today it is a black day for Deoghar as Congress MLA Irfan Ansari entered the Baidyanath Dham temple besides being a non-Hindu. Dubey said, "Entry of non-Hindus is not allowed in Baidyanath Dham temple at Deoghar. But Congress MLA Irfan Ansari entered the temple. I've spoken to chief secretary, demanding suspension of DC and SP. I've also demanded that Ansari be booked under NSA."

Petrol and diesel prices witnessed a minor surge in the national capital and stood at Rs 90.74 and Rs 81.12 per litre, respectively on Wednesday. The petrol prices were increased by 19 paise per litre and diesel by 21 paise in Delhi. Rates have been increased across the country and differ from state to state depending on the incidence of value-added tax. In Mumbai, the price of petrol and diesel stood at Rs 97.12 and Rs 88.19 per litre respectively. The price of petrol and diesel in Chennai was Rs 92.70 and Rs 86.09 per litre respectively and Rs 90.92 and Rs 83.98 per litre in Kolkata. Meanwhile, Congress slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the rise in the prices of petrol and diesel."Elections are over, Modi ji has shown taken off his mask, petrol-diesel prices started increasing; Modi ji, now it has been proved that you decide the price of petrol and diesel, not oil companies," tweeted Madhya Pradesh Congress in Hindi. They also shared a newspaper clipping whose headline reads "Petrol and diesel prices increased as soon as elections are over. Petrol in Bhopal up by 24 and diesel by 22 paise".
