In a conversation with the Indian Express, the chief medical advisor to the US Biden Administration, Anthony Fauci stressed that India should be put under complete lockdown to control the tsunami of covid cases. Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope on April 28 said the state cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, has approved around Rs 6,500 crore to provide free vaccination for people between 18-44 years in the state. Tope explained that the state has nearly 5.71 crore people in the above mentioned age group and thus the state would require 12 crore doses for their vaccination. The third phase of vaccination, covering people aged 18-44 years, will start from May 01 even as several states have expressed concerns over availability of vaccines.
Clearing the air regarding the phase-3 vaccination in Maharashtra, Aslam Shaikh, the Guardian Minister of Mumbai, said the decision to vaccinate the people of 18-44 age group free of cost could be taken by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray during the cabinet meeting today.
Maharashtra Minister Nawab Malik has said that no final decision has been taken on imposing lockdown in Mumbai yet. Speaking on the surge in Covid cases, Malik said that Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray in his interaction with the Prime Minister sought permission for Haffkine Institute to produce vaccines and allow vaccination of all people above 45 years of age. Mumbai's COVID-19 tally increased to 3,49,974 and eight deaths took the fatality count to 11,551 on Wednesday. Maharashtra's overall infection count rose to 23,70,507 on Wednesday. In view of the rising number of coronavirus cases, Maharashtra minister and president of Nationalist Congress Party of (NCP), Nawab Malik on March 18 said so far, no decision on lockdown has been taken in Mumbai, but people have to follows the guidelines, otherwise, strict action will be taken. Severe cyclonic storm Tauktae intensified overnight into 'very severe cyclonic storm' over eastcentral Arabian Sea according to the weather department. 100 rescue teams are deployed for six states - Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Goa. India Meteorological Department said that Tauktae is very likely to intensify further during the next 12 hours.
