As of May this year, the BJP is in power in 9 states/union territories. But in a coalition the BJP also has 6 more states. So, now it has control directly and indirectly over 15 states. In 2014, when Narendra Modi had come to power, the BJP ruled just 7 states. The Congress on the other hand which held 13 states in 2014 came down to six in 2022. This year will see five more assembly elections in the country. As the 2024 Lok Sabha polls thump forward, let’s see how the political dynamic shifts in India by the end of this year.

Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan is to be released on bail for two weeks following a decision from the Islamabad High Court. The bail means that he can’t be re-arrested on those charges for at least next two weeks. Imran Khan was back in the court following his arrest on Tuesday on corruption charges, which had sparked countrywide violence that had left at least 10 people dead and dozens injured. He remained in the court after the decision as his lawyers petitioned judges for similar protection in a number of other corruption charges, trying to close off legal avenues for the government to arrest him again. Pakistan’s Supreme Court had ruled yesterday that the arrest was unlawful and had ordered his immediate release from the custody. It had then asked the Islamabad High Court to reconsider its initial decision to uphold the arrest.

The criminal case against Anatoly Maslov, 76, will open in Saint Petersburg’s city court on June 1. The St. Petersburg City Court also ruled on May 24 that Maslov's detention would be extended until at least November 10. Soon after his arrest, authorities had flown him to Moscow and put him in pre-trial detention in Lefortovo prison…a former KGB interrogation site where Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich is also being held. The details of the case are classified, but some local media reports cited sources close to scientific circles as saying that the three scholars are suspected of handing information related to their research to China.
