This year’s National POW/MIA Recognition Day is held on Sept.

On National POW/MIA Recognition Day, the National League of Families’ POW/MIA flag is flown.

The flag symbolizes the country’s remembrance of those imprisoned or still missing due to conflicts of war.

According to the Defense Department’s POW/MIA Office, 1,741 Americans are listed as missing and unaccounted for from the Vietnam War.

90 percent of those people are believed to be lost in Vietnam or in areas of Laos and Cambodia
