The Philippines has vehemently denied accusations from China that it is provoking conflict in the disputed waters.
In a statement made by Medel Aguilar, the military spokesperson for the Philippines, he asserted that their actions are in compliance with international law and the enforcement of domestic regulations within their territorial waters and exclusive economic zone.
In response, the Chinese embassy in Manila accused the Philippines of causing tension by sending construction supplies to a grounded navy vessel in the disputed Second Thomas Shoal.
China warned that the Philippines, backed by external support, was challenging its principles and red lines.
The BRP Miguel Malvar, an 80-year-old World War II ship, sank unexpectedly before it could be used as a live-fire target in the U.S.-Philippine Balikatan drills. Originally set to be sunk off Zambales, rough seas and the vessel's age caused it to go under prematurely. The Malvar held historical value as a former U.S. Navy ship that once hunted Japanese submarines. Although the target drill was canceled, joint military exercises continued near the disputed Scarborough Shoal, highlighting growing U.S.-Philippine cooperation in deterring China's presence in the South China Sea.
