The calamity began with a startling noise, accompanied by tremors that shook the earth.
With over 200 gold miners present at the site, the search and rescue efforts have concluded, revealing a heartbreaking toll of 73 lives lost, as confirmed by Oumar Sidibe, an official representing gold miners in the southwestern town of Kangaba, and echoed by a local councillor.
The annual re-plastering of Mali's Great Mosque of Djenne, the world's largest mud-brick building and on UNESCO's Danger list since 2016, helps maintain its integrity.
