Lucknow: On the UCC bill tabled in Uttarakhand Assembly, Executive Member, All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahali says "As far as UCC is concerned, we are of the opinion that uniformity cannot be brought in each and every law and if you exempt any community from this UCC, how can it be called a uniform code?... There was no need for any such uniform civil code.
After the draft is presented before the Assembly, our legal team will study this and then the further course of action will be decided..."

In response to the Supreme Court's observation that Muslim women can seek maintenance from their husbands under Section 125 of the CrPC, Mohd. Sulaiman, a founding member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, commented on the legal and religious implications. He referenced the Shah Bano case of 1985, which led to new legislation, but emphasised that the interpretation of this law is determined by the higher judiciary. Sulaiman pointed out that the judiciary's stance suggests religious guarantees alone are insufficient for women’s protection. He acknowledged that while some women might prefer court decisions for maintenance, the issue remains that divorce under Islamic law doesn't finalise separation, preventing women from remarrying, which he deemed unnatural.

The Supreme Court on July 22 stayed the order passed by Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand police asking eatery owners along the Kanwar Yatra path to display names of owners and the staff employed by them. The directives issued by the Uttar Pradesh government are discriminatory, the top court said. The court was hearing a plea by an NGO that challenged the orders issued by the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand government. The order directed shop owners and eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to display the names of their owners.
