Tamil Nadu CM Stalin writes to EAM Jaishankar to secure release of 37 fishermen from Sri Lankan custody
Sunday, 29 October 2023 Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has written to the Indian External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, requesting assistance in securing the release of 37 fishermen and 5 fishing boats that were apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy. Stalin expressed concern over the frequent arrests of Tamil Nadu fishermen and called for the protection of their traditional fishing rights in the Palk Bay region. He also highlighted the need for strong diplomatic initiatives to resolve the issue. Earlier, Stalin had requested the release of 12 Tamil fishermen detained by the Maldivian Coast Guard.
