Born into a Bengali-Tamil family in Purulia in 1942, Acharia had a notable political career, representing Bankura as a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha for nine consecutive terms from 1980 to 2014. CPM State Secretary Md Salim, in honoring the late leader, highlighted Acharia's contributions as a member of the CPM central committee and the CPM West Bengal state committee.

On April 28, the Election Commission of India (ECI) directed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to revise the content of its Lok Sabha campaign song to adhere to the Advertising Codes outlined in the Cable Television Network Rules, 1994, and ECI guidelines. The AAP was requested to make necessary modifications to the song and resubmit it for certification. “The phrase “jail ke jawaab me hum vote denge” showing an aggressive mob holding the photo of Arvind Kejriwal showing him behind bars, casts aspersions on the Judiciary. Further, the said phrase appears several times in the advertisement which contravenes the provisions of ECI Guidelines and Rule 6(1(g) of Programme and Advertising Codes prescribed under the Cable Television Network Rules, 1994” (DISPLAY) said ECI.
