News24 | SA is facing a fast-escalating heroin crisis. And it's being misunderstood

Between 215 and 425 thousand people were using heroin daily across South Africa in 2020 (at the upper limit, this amounts to over 1% of the country's entire adult population). This is according to a study published recently in the Journal of Illicit Economies and Development.
