Sunday, 19 November 2023 S Venkitaramanan, the former governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has passed away at the age of 92. Prior to his role as RBI governor, he served as the finance secretary and an advisor to the government of Karnataka. Venkitaramanan's tenure as governor saw significant developments, including the adoption of the IMF's stabilisation program and the launch of economic reforms in India. Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin, RBI governor Shaktikanta Das, and senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh have offered their condolences.
RBI's action against Paytm and Kotak Mahindra Bank for non-compliance raised concerns. Kotak Mahindra's failure to meet data storage requirements led to RBI directives. Similar actions were taken against HDFC Bank in 2020. The events underscore the need for stronger regulatory mechanisms.

Polling in 102 parliamentary seats across 21 states and Union Territories in the first phase of Lok Sabha Elections commenced at 7 am on April 19 and ended at 6 pm. Over 102 parliamentary constituencies in 21 states and union territories headed to the polling booth on Friday, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir, Puducherry, Lakshadweep, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. West Bengal recorded the highest turnout till 5 PM at 77.57 per cent, followed by Tripura at 76.10 per cent. Voter turnout in Assam stood at 70.77 per cent, while Manipur recorded a voter turnout of 68.58 per cent till 5 PM.
