Venkitaramanan, who steered RBI during 1991 crisis, passes away at 92
Sunday, 19 November 2023 () S Venkitaramanan, the former governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has passed away at the age of 92. Prior to his role as RBI governor, he served as the finance secretary and an advisor to the government of Karnataka. Venkitaramanan's tenure as governor saw significant developments, including the adoption of the IMF's stabilisation program and the launch of economic reforms in India. Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin, RBI governor Shaktikanta Das, and senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh have offered their condolences.
The central bank revealed that nearly 97.26% of these high-denomination notes have been successfully returned to the banking system. In a statement released earlier today, the RBI disclosed that as of November 30, 2023, only about ₹9,760 crore worth of ₹2,000 bank notes remain with the public. This marks a significant reduction from the ₹3.56 lakh crore in circulation as of May 19, 2023, when the withdrawal of ₹2,000 bank notes was announced.
