Indian envoy to Iran meets Afghan counterpart in Tehran to boost ties
Tuesday, 4 March 2025 Indian ambassador Gaurav Shresth and Afghanistan counterpart Fazl Haqqani met in Tehran to discuss cooperation via the Chabahar port. India remains engaged with the Taliban despite not recognizing its government, focusing on enhancing exports and imports and its extensive developmental projects in Afghanistan.
A Conservative minister has described the Afghan leaks as "catastrophic", saying the breach is a huge threat to national security. The leak saw the details of almost 19,000 people seeking to flee Afghanistan released. Shadow energy secretary Claire Coutinho said the case needs to be looked at more closely to ensure the protection of the public.

A senior military advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has issued a stark warning: there is no ceasefire in place, Tehran and Jerusalem remain in a state of war, and the threat of renewed conflict looms large. Yahya Rahim Safavi, a key military aide, emphasized the urgency of bolstering Iran’s military capabilities, specifically its missile, drone, and cyber capacities, as preparations escalate. In chilling terms, Safavi declared: “We are not in a ceasefire… another war may happen,” adding ominously that such a clash could unfold "at any time." His message leaves little room for optimism.

France, Germany, and the United Kingdom have issued a fiery ultimatum to Iran, warning of severe sanctions if Tehran fails to return to compliance with the 2015 nuclear deal. The three European powers, collectively known as the E3, accuse Iran of accelerating uranium enrichment and blocking key inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency. The warning comes amid stalled negotiations and mounting fears that Iran is edging closer to weapons-grade capabilities.

Iran has issued a sharp “final” warning to block a U.S.-backed trade corridor through southern Armenia, part of a peace declaration between Armenia and Azerbaijan announced by Donald Trump. The route would give Azerbaijan direct access to Nakhchivan and Turkey, boosting regional trade while granting the U.S. exclusive development rights. Tehran has flexed military muscle to signal opposition, calling the plan a “graveyard for Trump’s mercenaries.” While analysts doubt Iran’s ability to militarily stop the corridor, tensions are rising across the Caucasus.

Sir Ed Davey accused Tories of letting down Afghans who supported British forces and protecting its ministers. It comes as a super-injunction blocking reporting about the “horrific” leak of data was lifted. The Ministry of Defence only became aware of the breach when excerpts from the dataset were posted anonymously on a Facebook group in August 2023, and a super-injunction was granted at the High Court in an attempt to prevent the Taliban from finding out about the leak. In a historic and controversial move, Russia has become the first nation to officially recognise the Taliban government in Afghanistan. The announcement was met with cautious optimism on the streets of Kabul, where many Afghans are now urging neighboring powers like Iran, Pakistan, and India to “choose friendship” over continued conflict. Locals say the recognition brings hope for stability, economic revival, and an end to international isolation. “War brings only destruction. We want peace and cooperation,” said Ahmad Zia Popal, a Kabul resident. The Taliban, still sanctioned by the West and condemned for its human rights record—especially on women’s rights—called Russia’s decision “courageous” and a model for others. While global criticism looms, many ordinary Afghans see this as a turning point. Moscow’s move also raises geopolitical questions as it deepens its footprint in the region amid growing tensions with the West.
