Dozens of Chinese coast guard and accompanying ships chased and encircled Philippine vessels in a dangerous confrontation in the South China Sea. At one point, a Chinese coast guard ship blasted a water cannon towards a Philippine motorboat delivering supplies. The Philippines, backed by the US, has been defending its territorial rights in the disputed waters, leading to fears of armed conflict.
