Yahoo reports that the Biden administration will invest $35 million in suicide prevention, counseling and other programs aimed at addressing a widely recognized mental health crisis in the United States.

The funding is meant to address growing problems with depression, anxiety and other disorders.

.

According to research, those problems were only exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

.

Mental health is fundamental to the overall health and well-being of our country’s children and young adults, Xavier Becerra, Health and Human Services Secretary, via Yahoo.

Yahoo reports that the $35 million will come from last year's coronavirus relief bill.

.

Late in 2021, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy called attention to the issue and promised to provide every American child with, “access to high-quality, affordable and culturally competent mental health care.”.

A global study of 80,000 children found that, "depressive and anxiety symptoms doubled during the pandemic.".

According to that study, there was also a 51% increase in the number of suspected suicide attempts by adolescent girls in the U.S. .

Last week , President Biden promised to , “take on mental health.

Especially among our children, whose lives and education have been turned upside down.”.

Supporters of the new funding hope the increased attention will shed light on the inadequacies of a mental health infrastructure unable to handle the current crisis.
